The Highway Code

The purpose of the Highway Code is to prevent accidents by ensuring we all adopt the same rules when we use the road. The Highway Code explains these rules as simply as possible and helps us to make sure they are understood. Road traffic law changes from time to time so make sure you keep up-to-date.

You must know and comply with

  • All traffic signs and road markings
  • Signals given by police officers, traffic wardens, school crossing wardens, highways agency traffic officers and any authorised person e.g. road workers operating a STOP/GO board

Traffic signals at

  • Junctions/crossroads
  • Road works
  • Narrow bridges
  • Pedestrian crossings
  • Fire/ambulance stations
  • Level crossings

The signs and markings found in the Highway Code are broken down into several categories which can be downloaded from the link below
